TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced on Friday (March 21) a significant increase in allowances for voluntary service members and combat units. Officers, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers below the rank of major will receive a boost in their allowances, rising from NT$10,000 (around US$303) to NT$15,000 (US$455). This move aims to enhance recruitment and retention within the armed forces.

During an inspection at Taipei Songshan Airport (松山機場), President Lai underscored that the allowance increases were the result of careful consideration and thorough discussions, not arbitrary demands. He highlighted the importance of supporting ground-level officers and soldiers in combat units, who will receive increases of up to NT$12,000 (US$364). This targeted approach aims to recognize the specific challenges and demands faced by frontline personnel.

President Lai expressed his gratitude to the armed forces for their dedication and professionalism displayed during the "immediate response" military drill (立即備戰操演) conducted earlier this week. He commended their swift response and precise execution of exercises, emphasizing their crucial role in strengthening Taiwan's defense capabilities and contributing to regional security. He reiterated Taiwan's commitment to peace and stability as a responsible member of the international community, while standing firm in its defense of freedom and democracy.

President Lai reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to supporting the military, emphasizing that adjustments to military benefits have been a top priority since he assumed office. The new allowance structure, effective April 1, includes increases for various ranks, with majors and colonels receiving an additional NT$4,000 (US$121) and generals NT$3,000 (US$91). Combat units will also see increases, with those in the most demanding roles receiving up to NT$12,000 (US$364).

President Lai appealed to the opposition to reconsider its stance on freezing the defense budget, advocating for maximum support for military personnel. He stressed the importance of unity across political lines in safeguarding national security and democracy. The president pledged his continued commitment to improving military welfare and urged the armed forces to maintain their dedication to training and defense duties.
