TAIPEI (TVBS News) — China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (中國外交部) on Monday (Feb. 17) urged Japan to adhere to the "One China" principle, warning against actions that could send the wrong signal regarding Taiwan. This statement comes as Japan's Ministry of Justice (日本法務省) plans to allow Taiwanese residents in Japan to change their registered domicile from "China" to "Taiwan" starting in May 2025, raising concerns in Beijing.
Guo Jiakun (郭嘉昆), a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized Taiwan as an inseparable part of Chinese territory, asserting that the Taiwan issue remains a domestic matter that should not involve any "external forces." Guo also pointed out Japan's historical responsibility due to its past aggression and colonial rule over Taiwan, urging Tokyo to exercise caution in its actions and statements.
According to a report by Nikkei (經濟新聞), the world's largest financial newspaper, Japan's Ministry of Justice will allow residents to mark their region of nationality on their records, enabling Taiwanese individuals to register as "Taiwan" to respect their identity.
