TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A report released on Wednesday (Jan. 22) revealed a significant shift in international students' study preferences in Taiwan. Information and communication technology (ICT) climbed from fifth to second place, reflecting the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) expertise.

Citing a global AI wave influencing international students' study decisions, the "2025 International Enrollment Blue Ocean Trend Report" (2025國際招生藍海趨勢報告) found Taiwan's traditional strengths in attracting international students include high-quality education (25.7%), a safe environment (15.5%), and opportunities to learn Mandarin (12.4%).

The report highlighted ICT's rising popularity, with preferences increasing from 12.3% in 2023 to 14.7% in 2025, second only to business management. International students prioritize scholarships, with digital channels like social media being key information sources. A new type of program offering "industry-academic scholarships" and "living/internship stipends" has attracted 84% of applicants.

The Association of International Cultural and Educational Exchange Taiwan (AICEE, 台灣國際文教創新交流協會) released the report. It conducted an online survey with over 3,000 students from 99 countries interested in studying abroad or learning Mandarin.

Professor Chen Mu-min (陳牧民) from Chung Hsing University (中興大學) noted over 20% of international students value scholarships more than quality education, suggesting scholarships remain crucial for attraction. Despite interest, Taiwan's job market poses challenges for international students. Chen recommends schools and the government develop strategies to address these issues.

Hung Chih-wei (洪志衛), the association's executive director, emphasized the rising preference for ICT and AI topics, urging universities and Mandarin centers to design diverse, appealing programs to meet varied student needs.
