TAINAN(TVBS News) — Tainan's Bureau of Transportation (台南市政府交通局) announced on Monday (Jan. 20) that taxi fares will increase by NT$50 during the Lunar New Year holiday to maintain market order and protect users' rights. This fare adjustment will apply from midnight Friday until midnight next Sunday (Feb. 2), covering 10 days.
The bureau clarified that this surcharge will be added to the regular day and night rates. They reminded drivers to use the built-in holiday surcharge function on their meters. If drivers fail to set this function, they must charge according to the meter without additional fees. The bureau aims to prevent unscrupulous operators from overcharging, as more citizens travel during holidays.
The 9-day holiday will see Tainan and Kaohsiung implementing the same 10-day surcharge period to avoid confusion and promote regional exchange. The bureau encourages the public to monitor taxi operators for any improper charges. They advised passengers to note the taxi number and time of travel to report any violations, such as unauthorized fare increases, detours, or refusals to accept short trips, to the citizen service hotline or relevant authorities.
As the holiday approaches, Tainan's Bureau of Transportation ensures fair practices. Citizens are urged to stay informed and report any discrepancies to uphold the integrity of the taxi service during this festive season.
