TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Environment (MOENV, 環境部) confirmed on Tuesday (Jan. 14) that hotels can still supply fixed, larger containers of shampoo and body wash, after receiving complaints from hotel customers about the inconvenience caused by the new regulation prohibiting hotels from providing disposable amenities.
Starting Jan. 1, hotels must refrain from offering disposable items like combs and toothbrushes, sparking public discontent as travelers face the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, especially when room rates exceed NT$10,000 per night.

The MOENV regulated six personal hygiene items in sizes less than 180 ml, including toothpaste and razors, cannot be displayed on business premises, though facilities like spas and pools remain exempt. Travelers can purchase or request these items for free at hotel counters, as the ministry emphasized the need for operators to assist guests.
Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming (彭啟明) addressed the issue, stating, "Reducing plastic is a global trend, and the Taiwanese may need an adaptation period." He stressed the importance of source reduction due to the planet's plastic crisis, noting that Taiwan's initiative is overdue.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Environment Shen Chih-hsiu (沈志修) added that the policy helps reduce waste at its source and encourages guests to bring their own toiletries, although they can still request them from hotels if they are forgotten. As Taiwan navigates this transition, the ministry encourages public cooperation to support the global movement toward sustainability.
