PENGHU (TVBS News) — Penghu County (澎湖縣) began distributing the Lunar New Year lucky red envelopes for the elderly (春節敬老平安禮金) on Tuesday (Jan. 14), providing NT$5,000 to each eligible senior citizen who is at least 65 years old and has been a resident for over three years. The initiative targets 20,400 seniors across the county, aiming to enhance their well-being and happiness.

Magistrate Chen Kuang-fu (陳光復) and Social Affairs Director Chou Po-ya (周柏雅) inspected the preparation process Tuesday, expressing gratitude to nearly 100 staff members for their dedication. Chen noted that the total distribution amount exceeds NT$100 million, emphasizing the county's commitment to ensuring a joyful and peaceful holiday for its elderly residents.

The county's social affairs department clarified that seniors born before Dec. 31, 1959, who meet the residency requirement, are eligible for the gift. On Monday, residents of the remote islands of Wang'an Township (望安) and Qimei Township(七美) received their payments in advance. On Tuesday, distribution commenced on the main island's four townships, with neighborhood representatives and clerks facilitating the process until March 13.

For those who missed the initial distribution period, a supplementary phase will run from March 14 to April 10. After this period, no further disbursements will occur, underscoring the importance of timely collection. Penghu County's initiative reflects a broader commitment to supporting its elderly population during the festive season.
