TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) warned on Tuesday (Jan. 14) of continued cold conditions across Taiwan due to radiative cooling. Temperatures in the western and northeastern regions dropped to 12-14 degrees Celsius, while Hualien and Taitung experienced 15-16°C. Areas near mountains in Tainan and Hualien saw temperatures around 10°C or lower, with Hsinchu mountain areas potentially reaching 6°C or below. Daytime temperatures will rise to 21-24°C, creating a significant day-night temperature difference.
Authorities advise agriculture, aquaculture, and individuals with health concerns to take precautions against the cold and ensure proper ventilation when using gas heaters. Most regions, including Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, will see sunny to partly cloudy skies, though rain chances will increase from south to north as a continental cold air mass moves in overnight. The south, central mountain areas, and parts of the east and north will experience brief showers, while Kinmen and Matsu remain mostly cloudy.
The Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network (空氣品質預報) reported that eastern regions, including Hualien and Taitung, enjoy "Good" air quality. However, due to poor air dispersion, central Taiwan and southern areas face "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" conditions. With the potential for snow above 3,000 meters in the northern and central mountains starting Wednesday night, the administration urges caution for those planning mountain activities.
