TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) confirmed on Sunday (Dec. 8) that government agencies inspected a Hong Kong-registered vessel docked at the Port of Taichung (台中港) and found no irregularities. They added that authorities will monitor the situation closely following concerns raised about national security.
Foreign correspondent Chris Horton (何貴森) tweeted on Friday (Dec. 6) that the vessel SCSC FORTUNE (長和輪) previously participated in Chinese military exercises. The Port of Taichung Taiwan International Ports Corporation, LTD. (台中港務分公司) confirmed the ship docked at Pier 14 on Tuesday at 9:20 p.m. and departed on Saturday around 3 p.m.
Horton highlighted a 2022 Twitter photo showing the vessel involved in Chinese military drills with special forces boats concealed onboard. The Port of Taichung emphasized that the ship's entry complied with regulations, and it did not linger excessively at the port.
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislator Puma Shen (沈伯洋) warned of China's adeptness at executing gray zone conflicts, urging vigilance against potential security threats. Shen also noted past incidents of Chinese nationals attempting to reach Taiwan via rubber boats, emphasizing the importance of awareness to prevent national security breaches.
As the situation unfolds, officials and experts continue to assess the potential implications for Taiwan's security landscape.
