NGERULMUD, PALAU (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) inspected a joint maritime rescue exercise with Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. on Friday (Dec. 6). The exercise, featuring Taiwan's coast guard patrol vessel "Yunlin" (雲林艦), aimed to enhance maritime rescue capabilities and showcased the vessel's advanced equipment, including high-pressure water cannons and medical facilities.
During the exercise, the "Yunlin," Taiwan's largest coast guard ship, joined two multipurpose boats donated to Palau in successfully rescuing five people from the water and conducting emergency drills. Lai highlighted the vessel's contributions to maritime humanitarian efforts, noting its operating room, negative pressure isolation ward, and helicopter landing facilities. He also recalled hosting its commissioning ceremony in June, emphasizing its role in strengthening Taiwan's maritime security.
Lai stressed Taiwan and Palau's shared commitment to maintaining maritime order, referencing a five-year-old coast guard exchanges cooperative agreement. He expressed gratitude to Taiwan's Coast Guard personnel for their dedication to democracy, freedom, and prosperity. Amid reports of potential Chinese military exercises this weekend, President Lai reassured that Taiwan has a close understanding and cooperation between national security units and allied countries. He urged China to choose diplomacy over military posturing.
