TAINAN (TVBS News) — National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU, 陽明交通大學) broke ground Friday (Nov. 22) on two research buildings at its Tainan campus, thanks to donations from Wistron Corporation (緯創資通) and Phison Electronics (群聯電子). With a total investment of NT$2.3 billion, the project aims to complete construction within three years, establishing a hub for AI semiconductor talent.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) highlighted the significant achievements of Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City (沙崙智慧綠能科學城) since 2016. The area has attracted major high-tech firms, including AMD's R&D center and Micron Technology's acquisition of AUO Corporation's (友達) Tainan plant.
The new buildings will enhance the Tainan campus with advanced teaching and experimental facilities. They aim to foster a mutually beneficial industry-academia collaboration platform, promoting research exchanges between tech professionals and the university's faculty and students. NYCU and Wistron Corporation also inaugurated the "Smart and Green Industry Innovation Joint R&D Center" (智慧與綠能產業創新聯合研發中心) on the same day.
Equipped with a "Smart PCBA Production Area" (智慧 PCBA 生產區), an "Industrial IoT Lab" (工業物聯網實驗室), and a "Smart Automation Lab," (智慧自動化實驗室) the center will serve as a crucial base for intelligent manufacturing and green energy R&D. It will offer students practical learning experiences and provide external training and certification for human-machine collaboration skills.
